Chiropractic Adjustments

Chiropractic adjustments or treatments are based on the belief that the relationship between the body’s spine and the nervous system affect overall health. When your exam indicates you would benefit from an adjustment to your spine or other parts of your body, our goal is to correct any alignment problems in order to help alleviate pain, improve function and enhance your body’s ability to heal itself. Chiropractic treatments include:

  • Heat or cold therapy to help relax tight muscles or reduce inflammation prior to treatment.  We have both heat & ice packs depending on need or preference.

  • Manual manipulation is the most common type of adjustment, using hands to apply a controlled rapid force to move bones “back into place” and increase range and quality of motion. Patient position and/or the chiropractic table may frequently need re-adjusting to improve the results of each manual adjustment.

  • The Activator Method uses a small hand-held device to deliver a precise and targeted adjustment with only a light clicking sound from the instrument. Because it uses less force than manual manipulation, some find it a more comfortable treatment.  The result, however, is the same for both methods.

Examinations

When aches and pains bring you to our clinic, we use a variety of methods to determine what chiropractic treatments can provide you with the best results.  This exam may be similar in many ways to what your primary physician may do, including:

  • X-rays

  • Palpation of the area causing pain

  • Manual examination of the spine to feel for misalignments

  • Checking for range of motion

  • Checking leg length to determine degree of misalignment & where adjustments may be needed

Light Therapy / Cold Laser

Low-level laser (light) therapy (LLLT), also called Cold Laser, is a fast-growing technology used to treat four broad categories of issues:

  • Tissue repair (bones & cartilage, tendons & ligaments, peripheral nerves, wounds/ulcers & burns, acne & surgical scars )

  • Pain reduction

  • Inflammation (muscle injuries)

  • Reducing/eliminating bacteria (infections)

Light or Cold laser therapy is an exciting option that can potentially provide pain relief or pain reduction without the use of surgery or drugs. Treatments are painless and short and can be used alone or in combination with other therapies. However, it is likely several treatments will be needed to achieve noticeable improvement.  Be sure to ask us about this therapy if you have further questions.

“After hurting my shoulder brushing snow off my car, an MRI revealed a small tear & fraying of the rotator cuff, a frayed bicep tendon and labrum tearing. My orthopedic MD said my shoulder was so bad he didn’t think surgery would help. But cold laser has provided amazing pain relief. I’m a believer!”

Massage

Whether long workdays at the computer or long hours of yard work or shoveling led to your discomfort and pain, our experienced massage therapists can help you get back to feeling better

Therapeutic massage differs from massage for relaxation in that the goal is to address a specific complaint, such as pain in your hip, tight shoulders, or a spasm in your lower back.  Our massage therapists will:

  • Assess your condition & get a history of your problem/pain.

  • Propose a treatment plan, including a recommended number of massage sessions. Other therapies such as heat, ice, hydrotherapy, or stretches may also be suggested.

  • Provide a therapeutic massage based on the assessment & approved treatment plan.

  • Evaluate results with you & discuss if a continued or different course of therapy is recommended.

Muscle Stimulation

Electrical muscle stimulation, also called "e-stim" or "TENS," is used to provide pain relief and muscle

re-education. Adhesive patches with wires connected to the E-stim machine are attached to the painful body part to provide gentle electrical current to the underlying muscles.  When the desired muscle contractions occur, muscles begin to relax and start to reduce pain. The treatment itself is not painful.

Pain relief results from blocking the nerves that deliver pain sensations, as well as the release the body's natural painkillers -- endorphins and encephalins.  A 2014 study on patients with moderate to severe pain showed that e-stim produced a clinically significant reduction in pain severity.

E-stim is one of many therapeutic tools that we may recommend for your rehabilitation.  It is useful for reducing pain from injuries to:

  • Lower back

  • Neck

  • Shoulders

  • Hand/Wrist (Carpal tunnel)

Nutritional Supplements

Supplements can be useful for filling in gaps in our diets or when certain health conditions cause other deficiencies or issues.  Supplements are often used therapeutically to treat specific health conditions when use of a prescription medicine may need to be limited because of potentially adverse effects.

We have a variety of nutritional supplements and would be glad to provide you with recommendations depending on your need or health issue.

Orthotics  - Custom Inserts, Shoes & Flip-flops

Foot issues are a common cause of knee, hip, leg and lower back pain. Custom orthotics are a proven option for pain relief for a several reasons:

  • Better Foot Support - With 26 bones and 100+ muscles, your feet are one of the most complex parts of your body. Custom orthotics provide the critical support your feet need to bear the entire weight of your body.

  • Improved Foot Comfort - Unlike over-the-counter insoles, custom orthotics fit your unique foot structure and give you support exactly where you need it.

  • Reduced Pain - Over-the-counter insoles cannot address your specific foot issues. Study after study show that custom orthotics can decrease foot and knee pain, and more.

  • Corrected Pronation - Collapsed arches increase stress on the knees, hips and lower back, making you more susceptible to injury. The right arch support from custom orthotics gives other joints the support needed to function correctly.

  • Corrected Supination - Very high arches or one arch higher than the other can strain knees, hips and lower back. Custom orthotics help your body maintain a more anatomically correct position.

  • Enhanced Athletic Performance - Custom orthotics not only lower your risk of injury but improve balance and body position to help you perform better when playing sports.

We have solutions to improve alignment and help reduce your foot and other joint pain. Ask us about our Custom Orthotic Inserts and our Custom Orthotic Shoes.  Hate to wear shoes in the summer?  We even have Custom Orthotic Flip Flops!!

Ultrasound

Ultrasound uses painless sound waves to provide deep heat to soft tissues in the body.  It is delivered using a small hand-held device called a transducer, similar to what you may have seen used to take images of a fetus in pregnant women.

After applying a gel to improve sound wave transmission, the transducer is moved in a gentle circular motion to generate deep heating that helps with blood circulation and reducing inflammation, swelling and pain.  It can also help relax tissues so they respond better to stretching or chiropractic adjustment.

Ultrasound is useful for helping heal injuries to:

  • Muscles

  • Tendons

  • Ligaments

  • Joints

X-Rays

Because chiropractic treatments involve manipulation and adjustment of the spine and other body structures, an x-ray may be performed on your first visit to help us understand where you are out of alignment and determine exactly where adjustments would be beneficial.

Another benefit of an x-ray is to help rule out issues, such as a fracture or tumor, which might suggest you visit your family physician or orthopedic specialist instead.
